July 24 Gibsons to Vancouver

Sailing in English Bay. UBC on the point to the left.

On July 24, Marty, Edward and Mae headed off to Vancouver. Engines on at 9:50 a.m. and sails set by 10:15 a.m. It has been one of many sailing dreams for Marty to sail into English Bay. We sailed past UBC, Kits Beach, and around many freighters. There were lasers, power boats, paddle boards and many other boats all around us. We sailed very close to the entrance of False Creek where we had a reservation for three evenings at “Fishermen’s Wharf” next to Granville Island. Our dock was located between the Burrard and Granville Bridges.

Can you find our boat?

We were in walking distance from Granville Market. There was a lot happening at Granville Island and there was no shortage of tourists like us.

Our timing was perfect as this evening was one of Vancouver’s Celebration of Lights. Spain took the stage. After a late dinner at Cat’s Social House, we had to walk off a huge meal. We went to Vanier Park to watch the fireworks. There were thousands of boats out there. It was a good thing we decided not to take our dinghy out in the chaos.

It was great that the people next to us brought their radio as a local station played the music that went with the fireworks. Other than a few new fireworks we had never seen, the show was so-so.
